Black & White: Race in America

I watched the special on CNN called Black & White: Race in America last night. Anderson Cooper and a team of psychiatrists randomly selected over a hundred children and tested them with Kenneth and Maimie Clark's doll experiment. They sat down and asked the children a series of questions relating to race and they select which doll is best fit, the black doll or the white doll. During the show their was this one girl, she couldn't have been any older than 5, and they asked her what skin color does she want to be and she picks the white doll. When Anderson Cooper asks her why she says because she doesn't like her skin color because the way "brown" looks is a little nasty for some reason. I mean once she said that it red flagged me that her attitude is learnt behavior. I believe that children absorb what they see and hear. People tend to forget that a child's mind is like a sponge. So any information they receive, will be stuck in their minds. A story my hairdresser told me about her twin daughters years ago continues to shock me till this day. At the time her children were about 6 years old and they would come home and tell her they don’t have anyone to play with during recess. So when she asks why they tell her because all the white kids play together and all the spanish kids play together so since there are no other black kids in their class, they are forced to play with each other. So I guess the way children perceive race is a combination of what is taught to them at home and in school. What do you think?

Book Haul!

I stopped by Barnes & Nobles yesterday and was greeted by my favorite word...CLEARANCE!! They have a large amount of books on sale for 75%. So I started digging and bought two books for about $7 total! Can't beat that.

The first one is called Still I Rise by Roland Laird & Taneisha Nash Laird. It talks about African American history from the 1600's to now in comic book form. The book was a quick history lesson with a twist of humor. Its interesting to see how much our ancestors had to endure to get the right to vote, keep a job and gain their freedom. Whats sad to say is that today some people are still fighting those same battles.

The other book I bought is called More Black Memorabillia: A Handbook & Price Guide. I don't own any memorabillia but I specifically bought this book to see what kinds of things were made to represent blacks. From women constantly being portrayed as the mammy and bare skinned children playing with tigers as if there animals, this book has alot of powerful images.

Clairol Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Moisturizing Conditioner
I just bought this product yesterday and I love it! After reading alot of natural hair blogs I noticed that alot of people liked using it. From this line I sometimes use the totally twisted conditioner as a detangler.

This is what I did after taking out my braids:
1) I detangled with water and VO5 Moisture Milks.
2) Applied Giovanni's Tea Tree Conditioner and covered my hair with a shower cap.
3) Let it marinate overnight.
4) The next morning I rinsed out the conditioner and parted my hair into 4 sections.
5) I washed with Burt Bee's Baby Bee Shampoo and rinsed.
6) I then applied the Hello Hydration and let my hair air dry.
**When it dried, my hair felt soooo soft. Definitely a product I will be using more often.**

2Review: It's a Half Wig- Fame

My friends call me the guinea pig because I'm always trying out new hair products. I wanted to try a new line of wigs because Outre isn't doing it for me anymore. Sooo I bought this wig called Fame made by the It's a Wig Collection. I got it at a good deal because Clair Hair was having a 20% sale. I've had it almost for a month and a half now and its still holding up great. One of the best secrets to keeping your wig looking nice is to keep product usage to a minimum. So I do that and pull apart the curls every few days to make sure it doesnt tangle and VIOLA! Got yourself a good wig. I'm debating on trying another half wig they make called Violet. It's similar to Fame but the curl pattern is tighter.

Kinky Twists

I attempted to put some kinky twists in my hair. After watching numerous youtube videos I decided I was going to try to "twist" it from the root instead of "braiding" it. This was a lot more difficult than I thought. I used some left over hair I bought from clairhair.com and bought 3 packs from a local beauty supply store in color 30. The hair I bought from clairhair.com was so much better than the beauty supply store one and it was cheaper. I only kept in the braids for about 2 weeks because I started to miss my hair.
